Netherton abuser jailed for five and a half years

Adam Gelhardt, 27, of Downside Close in Netherton, has been jailed for five-and-a-half years after admitting a series of domestic abuse offences against three former partners. His crimes included kicking and stamping on a pregnant woman.

At Liverpool Crown Court, Gelhardt pleaded guilty to two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breaching a suspended sentence. The court heard his offending spanned three years and involved threats, violence and intimidation fuelled by drugs and alcohol.

Victim's account

One victim told the court she had an abortion at 18 weeks, saying she "couldn't bear the thought" of her child growing up surrounded by fear and instability. Gelhardt was also handed 15-year restraining orders banning him from contacting all three victims.

Judge's remarks

Judge Simon Medland KC said: "I am struggling to recall offences of controlling and coercive behaviour of this type which are more serious than the ones which have unfolded before me today."
