John Davies, 58, has been sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison after throwing boiling water over a police officer who was attempting to arrest him in Birmingham. The incident occurred in his garden, where he had cornered a man against a fence.
Attack Details
Police were called to Davies' home after he became incensed and threw a hot drink at a man who told officers Davies had a knife. When a female officer asked if he was armed, Davies replied, 'Search me,' before throwing the contents of a hot kettle at her, causing blisters on her shoulders, neck, and back. He also punched her colleague in the face.
Injuries and Arrest
In footage of the attack, the officer is heard screaming, 'I need an ambo. I’ve been scalded with a kettle.' It took several officers to finally detain Davies. He later admitted to maliciously wounding the police constable to resist arrest and assaulting the man in the garden.
Sentencing
At Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, Davies was sentenced to 14 years and six months in jail, with an extended licence period of four years. Both officers have since returned to work.
Police Statement
DC Manpreet Sidhu said: 'This was a horrendous attack on two officers going about their duties. You can see from the footage that Davies put up a struggle, and it took many officers to restrain him. One of the officers suffered significant injuries and has only recently been able to return to work. No one should have to face this level of violence simply for doing their job. This will have a lasting impact on the officers, but now Davies is where he firmly belongs, in prison.'
