A Liverpool maths teacher who sent more than 200 emails to a teenage girl could be banned from the profession. Jamil Wali worked at Kings Leadership Academy in Dingle when he contacted the pupil between January and March 2024.
Unacceptable professional conduct
The Teacher Regulation Agency (TRA) heard that Mr Wali accepted he had not maintained professional boundaries and had sent inappropriate messages. Some emails were sent as early as 5am and as late as 11pm. He told the girl 'you mean a lot to me' and discussed his own private life.
Panel chair Duncan Tilley said around 204 emails were sent to the teenager, whom Mr Wali called 'mate'. He acknowledged this broke professional boundaries. A charge of sexual conduct was not proven.
Overfamiliarity and dependency
The school's safeguarding lead became aware of the emails, and Mr Wali was suspended. The TRA panel found he created an overfamiliar relationship and a 'dependency and reliance' on him. He intended to provide support but was not qualified to do so.
Mr Tilley stated Mr Wali's actions amounted to unacceptable professional conduct and brought the profession into disrepute. A decision on a sanction, which could include a permanent ban from teaching, will be made in a private session.
