Father Gets 10 Years for Stomping Son to Death

Marquavious Ware, 23, was sentenced to ten years in prison on Monday in Oregon after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the death of his four-year-old son, Jhorden Clay. The plea agreement, reached in June, reduced initial assault and murder charges and allows him to cut over three years through credits for time served since his 2023 arrest.

The Abuse

Authorities discovered Jhorden with bruises, scars, and cigarette burns at Ware's apartment in Portland's Woodlawn neighborhood. The boy died from blunt force trauma and a collapsed heart, with an autopsy also revealing severe malnutrition and dehydration while under his father's care over several weeks during what was meant to be a two-day visit in 2023.

The child's mother, who had custody, said Ware refused to return Jhorden after the planned visit. Other children and relatives in the household reportedly witnessed the beating in the weeks leading up to his death.

The Final Incident

A relative called police on the day of the death, stating that Ware became angry after discovering Jhorden had smuggled Skittles into his bed before soiling it. The relative briefly stepped out and returned to find the boy appearing to have a seizure.

A probable cause affidavit states: "[A family member] reported that he heard Marquavious Ware yelling and ran upstairs to see victim in the bathtub with defendant washing blood from victim's mouth." Police observed blood on the bed, pillow, floor, doorway, and in the bathroom, along with vomit and blood in the toilet.

Medical Findings

The child was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. Medical personnel reported bruising to Jhorden's face, jaw, neck, ears, chest, abdomen, thighs, hips, calves, and arms, as well as cigarette burns and scarring. Experts determined the bruising occurred between two hours and less than 30 days prior.
