Ex-police officer jailed for 7-year sexual relationship with victim

Former police officer Christopher Cave, 62, has been jailed for one year and nine months after engaging in a sexual relationship with a victim of crime that spanned seven years. The relationship began in 2004 while Cave was serving as an officer in Nottinghamshire and continued until early 2011.

Allegations and Charges

Allegations surfaced in 2022, leading to Cave's arrest and charges of two counts of misconduct in a public office. At the time, Cave was working as an evidence review officer for South Yorkshire Police. He was suspended from duties in June 2022 following his arrest.

Appearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, Cave, of Formby in Liverpool, admitted the offenses and received his sentence.

Cave's Police Career

Cave had served as a police officer for seven years at South Yorkshire Police. After retiring, he returned to the force in a staff role and later as an evidence review officer. His position was part of a scheme for individuals with over 30 years of police service.

He officially resigned from the force in December 2023 and pleaded guilty to the two charges earlier this year.

Victim Impact and Police Response

Detective Constable Nicola Milner, the officer in charge of the case, stated: "Cave crudely and blatantly abused the trust placed in him as a police officer and the victim in this case remains at the forefront of our minds. His conduct fell well below the standard that is expected of our officers and we welcome the result of today's sentencing in court."

Internal Misconduct Proceedings

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that an internal misconduct process will proceed following the conclusion of the criminal case.
