Former Royal Navy petty officer Allan Grimson, already serving life for two murders, has been handed an additional 22 years in prison for a series of sex offences committed in the 1990s. The sentence was passed today at Winchester Crown Court.
Background of the Case
Grimson, nicknamed the "Frankenstein killer" due to his 6ft 2in frame and large forehead, was jailed for life in 2001 after luring two young recruits to his flat in Portsmouth and murdering them when they rejected his advances. He killed Nicholas Wright, 18, on December 12, 1997, and Sion Jenkins, 20, exactly 12 months later.
In July, Grimson was convicted of sexually assaulting three young men in the Navy and one teenager around the same period. He abused the victims in the same flat in Portsmouth where he murdered the pair.
Additional Convictions and Sentence
Grimson was also found guilty of 11 counts of indecent assault, one count of rape, and one count of taking indecent photographs of a child. The court heard he could have been released on parole while serving his life sentence until he was charged with the historic offences. His crimes against the victims occurred between February 1994 and November 1999.
Grimson told police one of the men was "lucky to be alive," adding: "If you're going to rape somebody, to get away with it, kill it." One of his sex attack victims said he could only open up about the horror after Grimson was jailed in 2001 because he then felt "safe."
Details of the Murders
Grimson served in the Royal Navy, and in 1999 he was a serving Petty Officer Marine Engineering Mechanic and an instructor at the Royal Navy Firefighting School in Horsea Island, Portsmouth. The prosecution said this brought Grimson, a "big, powerful man," into contact with many young men in their late teens.
Nicholas Wright was bludgeoned with a baseball bat after rejecting Grimson's advances. Grimson sliced his ear off with a diving knife, and once Nicholas was too hurt to defend himself, Grimson slit his throat. The next day, Grimson wrapped his naked body up, telling police he felt a "tingling" sensation while doing so, and dumped the body in a ditch.
Exactly one year later, Grimson attacked and raped Sion in his flat before tying him up and putting him in a bathtub. As the 20-year-old begged to go home, the killer beat him to death with a bat and dumped his body by the side of the A32.
Prior Conviction and Suspicions
Grimson confessed to his crimes in detail, leading one expert to brand him the most dangerous psychopath of the 250 he had examined. He was jailed in 2001 at Winchester Crown Court for life with a minimum of 22 years.
The former petty officer is feared to have killed up to 20 people. He has also been named as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Simon Parkes, an 18-year-old Royal Navy sailor last seen in December 1986 in Gibraltar, where Grimson was stationed at the time. Simon Parkes' family have spent nearly four decades searching for closure but are convinced he fell victim to Grimson. At the time of the original sentencing, Mr Justice Cresswell told him: "You are a serial killer in nature if not in number. You are a highly dangerous serial killer who killed two young men in horrifying circumstances."
