Doctor sentenced to 2.5 years for ketamine linked to Matthew Perry's death
Doctor sentenced over ketamine death of Matthew Perry

A California doctor has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for his role in illegally providing ketamine to actor Matthew Perry, whose death in 2023 shocked fans worldwide.

The Sentence and Charges

Dr Salvador Plasencia, who operated an urgent care clinic, received his sentence on Wednesday, 3 December 2025. He had previously pleaded guilty to four federal counts of distributing ketamine. Notably, prosecutors did not charge him with directly providing the specific dose that led to the actor's death.

The court heard how Plasencia exploited the vulnerability of the 54-year-old Friends star for financial gain. His defence lawyers argued that he had already faced severe professional consequences, having lost his medical license and career.

Details of Matthew Perry's Death

Matthew Perry died in October 2023. The official cause was determined to be the acute effects of ketamine, with contributing factors including drowning and coronary artery disease. The beloved actor's passing prompted a widespread investigation into the source of the powerful anaesthetic.

Federal prosecutors described Plasencia's actions as those of a "drug dealer in a white coat," highlighting a breach of medical trust.

Wider Investigation and Other Defendants

This case forms part of a broader probe. In total, five people were federally charged in connection with Perry's death.

Among them are the actor's former personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and another individual named Jasveen Sangha. These co-defendants have faced various charges, with some having already entered guilty pleas related to their involvement in the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

The sentencing of Dr Plasencia marks a significant step in a case that has drawn intense scrutiny to the illegal distribution of prescription drugs and the responsibilities of medical professionals.
