Australian Dad's Heartbreak as Baby Ana Returns to US in Tug-of-Love
Dad's heartbreak as baby returns to US in custody battle

An Australian father has shared a poignant update on his international custody battle, revealing the heartache of saying goodbye to his baby daughter after a Christmas reunion.

A Whirlwind Romance and a Sudden Separation

Dan Gaut, a carpenter from Sydney's north, met American Liv Pavlov at a shamanic retreat in California in 2023. After a brief ten-day stay together in a Sydney sharehouse, the couple felt a spiritual connection and decided to have a child. Their daughter, Ana Rose (also called Anata, meaning 'forever'), was conceived during this time.

However, the relationship fractured when a pregnant Ms Pavlov, a life coach and tantric healer from Austin, Texas, unexpectedly returned to the United States. She rekindled a past relationship and initially explored putting the unborn child up for adoption, citing disagreements with Mr Gaut on how to raise their daughter.

A Desperate Dash to Stop an Adoption

Mr Gaut's story captured national attention when he flew to the US in a desperate bid to halt the adoption process. His efforts were successful, and he was reunited with baby Ana, eventually bringing her back to Australia to live with him.

While Ms Pavlov initially agreed Ana should be raised in Australia, the former couple have since reached a compromise. They now plan to share custody across both countries, with the child spending time in the United States and Australia.

The Agony of Goodbye After a Festive Reunion

Last week, Mr Gaut expressed his profound sadness on Instagram after Ana returned to America following a pre-Christmas visit. The family, including Ms Pavlov and Mr Gaut's parents, had enjoyed a festive outing in Byron Bay, New South Wales, complete with Santa photos on the beach.

"Feeling super alone today, these pics were taken a week ago, Ana is in America now and the house is empty," the devoted father wrote alongside happy snaps. He described the challenge of focusing on gratitude, calling it "a good practice" despite the difficulty.

Just days before, he had posted about "Pre Christmas Daddy Daughter time" with his "sweet little girl". The stark contrast highlighted the emotional rollercoaster of their international custody arrangement.

Australians flooded his social media with messages of support, acknowledging the toughness of shared custody across vast distances and praising him as an "amazing dad."

Ms Pavlov has previously stated that adoption was only a suggested option due to their initial disagreements and that no formal proceedings began. She maintains that both parents love Ana deeply and envisions a future where their daughter spends significant time in both countries.

"The reality is, we didn't really know each other," Ms Pavlov conceded about their brief relationship. This complex case underscores the challenging legal and emotional landscapes navigated by families separated by international borders.
