Malkiat Rai jailed for historical sex offences
A Salford man who sexually abused a young girl in the 1990s has been jailed for seven and a half years. Malkiat Rai, 59, was in his mid-20s when he committed the offences, Manchester Crown Court heard. The victim faced her abuser in court and told him: "What you did did not affect one moment of my childhood - it affected the course of my entire life." Rai's brother, Jaswant Singh Rai, was jailed for three years and 10 months in 2024 for offences against the same victim, including five counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child. He was a teenager at the time.
Both Douk Deng jailed for armed school visit
A failed asylum seeker who went to a school carrying a hammer, a hatchet and a kitchen knife has been jailed for two years. Both Douk Deng, 21, of Taylor Street, Heywood, wanted to "create a scene for attention" after becoming frustrated that immigration authorities were not helping him stay and work in the UK, Minshull Street Crown Court heard on Tuesday, July 28. The South Sudanese national, who was refused asylum on three occasions, was arrested after workmen confronted him at Edgar Wood Academy in Heywood on August 6 last year. He had previously pleaded guilty to criminal damage and possessing weapons and a knife in a public place and on school premises.
Alan Ronald Ohara jailed over Adam drugs line
A drug dealer known as "Rocket Ronny" has been jailed for his part in the notorious Adam drugs line in Rochdale. Alan Ronald Ohara, 47, of Stamford Street, Stalybridge, was sentenced to two years and four months after admitting two counts of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. The line was controlled by Haider Ali, 34, known as "The Ghost", who was caught after a CCTV operator spotted a suspected drug deal on Baron Street. Officers followed a Nissan Qashqai and arrested Ali, who tried to run from the front passenger seat. He had £1,000 in cash and wraps of cocaine and heroin in his pockets, while 75 wraps of cocaine and 32 wraps of heroin were found on the dashboard. Prosecutor Craig MacGregor told the court Ali was the line's "controller". Ohara acted as his driver. A 17-year-old, Shane Walsh, was in the rear of the car and acted as Ali's "trusted lieutenant". Walsh, now 19, was given a two-year community order with 180 hours of unpaid work and an electronically-monitored curfew. Ali, of Pike Street, Rochdale, is due to be sentenced later. He was jailed for four years and six months in 2015 for conspiracy to supply heroin and cocaine.
Szuhel Lee jailed for child sexual offences
A Salford paedophile who flew to the United States to have sex with a "girl" has been jailed again after being caught by an undercover officer. Szuhel Lee, 53, was jailed in Florida in 2013 for 10 years for inciting a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity. After his release in 2022, he contacted an undercover police officer on the internet and asked about abusing a "man's granddaughter" before speaking to a "girl" — both fictitious. He was later arrested and found with hundreds of indecent images of children, some aged between 0 and 12 months. Lee pleaded guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child, making category A, B and C indecent images, and possession of an extreme pornographic image. He was jailed for 27 months.
Syed Ahmad given life sentence for murder
A man who murdered his wife in a "brutal, deliberate and determined" knife attack has been jailed for life. Syed Ahmad, 45, attacked Anam Rafay, 36, at their home in Wythenshawe on the morning of January 27 this year, after she asked for a divorce. She suffered at least 40 stab wounds. Manchester Crown Court heard Ahmad was controlling, abusive and violent towards Mrs Rafay for years, including taking control of her wages and repeatedly assaulting her. They had an arranged marriage when she was 16 and he was 25. After she served divorce papers, Ahmad asked for mediation, and she gave him "one more chance to change", but he never did. The night before her death, Mrs Rafay told him she wanted a divorce. The next morning, he attacked her with a large kitchen knife. When she ran to a neighbour's house for help, he chased her and continued the frenzied attack. Afterwards, he went back home and appeared to "smirk" or "smile". He then sent a message to the family WhatsApp group stating: "I have killed my wife." A post-mortem found 40 stab wounds to her neck, body, arms and legs, with injuries to both lungs, diaphragm, kidney, liver and spleen. Judge Goddard KC imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years and two months.
