A man previously convicted of manslaughter and for persistently stalking Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Tweedy has been returned to prison after breaking the rules of his release.
Licence Breach Leads to Immediate Recall
Daniel Bannister, aged 51, was taken back into custody on Tuesday after authorities discovered alcohol in his possession at a bail hostel. This action directly violated the strict conditions of his licence, as first reported by The Sun.
A spokesperson for HM Prison and Probation Service stated: “As this case shows, we do not hesitate to send offenders back to prison where necessary if they break the rules.” It is understood Bannister will now remain behind bars until the formal end of his sentence.
A History of Harassment and a Frightened Family
This latest incident follows a series of breaches concerning the pop star. Bannister had been sentenced to 12 months in prison last September for ignoring a restraining order. This came after he appeared at Cheryl Tweedy's rural home for a fourth time on 19 June last year.
In a powerful victim impact statement, the singer revealed the profound effect of Bannister's actions. She said she was “stunned” by his repeated appearances, which had forced her to hire personal security. Most distressingly, his behaviour had left her young child feeling scared.
A Lengthy Criminal Record Including Manslaughter
Bannister's troubling history with the law extends far beyond stalking. In 2012, he killed 48-year-old Rajendra Patel at a YMCA shelter in south London, later pleading guilty to manslaughter.
His harassment of Cheryl Tweedy led to an initial four-month jail term in September 2024, coupled with a three-year restraining order. He breached that order by turning up at her home in December 2024. Subsequently, in March last year, Wycombe Magistrates' Court jailed him for 16 weeks for repeatedly visiting her Buckinghamshire home while under the order.
Following his most recent conviction last September, the courts imposed a fresh restraining order prohibiting any contact with the singer. His failure to comply with even the basic rules of his supervised release has now resulted in his swift return to a prison cell.
