Cannabis farmer: 'I should have listened to my mother'

A cannabis farmer told police "I should have listened to my mother" as officers caught him red-handed during a raid on a Washington home.

Police searched a three-bedroom semi-detached house at Swirral Edge, Washington, on September 22 this year. Ridvan Fangaj tried to leave through the back door but was arrested and made the comment about his mum, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

When he heard police talking about forensic evidence, he told them he wore gloves while working in the cannabis farm.

130 plants and harvested cannabis found

There were five growing areas containing a total of 130 plants as well as 7.3 kilos of harvested cannabis in bags and £1,760 cash.

Fangaj, 25, of Swirral Edge, Washington, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and was jailed for 15 months.

Role described as 'dogsbody'

Sophie Allinson-Howells said people performing the role Fangaj did were "dogsbodies" who were "working at the coal face" and only trusted with information relevant to their job.

She added that Fangaj has signed voluntary deportation papers without contesting it, although deportation would happen anyway given the length of his sentence.
