Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, could face misdemeanor charges after a hit-and-run car crash in Yountville, California, on Friday. The Napa County Sheriff's Office reported that Pelosi struck a legally parked car, causing major damage, and then drove away. No injuries were reported.
Details of the Incident
According to the sheriff's office, Pelosi was driving his brown convertible when he hit a parked car on the side of the road. A witness saw the collision and called 911. Deputies later found Pelosi about a quarter-mile away with damage to the front of his car. Pelosi told officers he knew he hit something but was unsure when or what caused the damage.
Pelosi, 86, did not have any alcohol in his system. The sheriff's office referred him to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a process to determine his fitness to drive, a common step for older drivers. He was not arrested, and because no one was injured, the sheriff's office recommended a misdemeanor charge for fleeing the scene of an accident.
Response from the Pelosi Family
A spokesperson for the Pelosis said Paul had personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them he would take responsibility for the damage. Nancy Pelosi will not comment further on the private matter, according to the spokesperson. Nancy Pelosi, who is in her 20th term representing San Francisco in the US House, has announced she will retire in early 2027.
Previous Legal Issues
This incident follows Paul Pelosi's 2022 guilty plea to misdemeanor DUI charges in Napa County. He was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation, but served only two days in jail due to good conduct credit. He also attended a three-month drinking driver class, installed an ignition interlock device, and paid about $5,000 in victim restitution and nearly $2,000 in fines.
In 2022, Paul Pelosi was also attacked at his San Francisco home by an intruder, David DePape, who severely beat him with a hammer. DePape was sentenced to life imprisonment.
