A 32-year-old woman in New South Wales, Australia, has been charged with murder after allegedly walking into Wyong Police Station and confessing to cooking and eating parts of her four-year-old son.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, entered the police station at 4:40 p.m. on Saturday and spoke to officers, prompting a welfare check at her home. While in custody, she allegedly told police she had consumed parts of her son. Officers who searched the property later that day discovered the child's body, which had been deceased for some time and had significant injuries to the arms and legs.
Investigation and Forensic Procedures
Police have established a crime scene at the home in the quiet seaside suburb, about an hour and a half drive north of Sydney. Homicide detectives from the state police are investigating. A forensic procedure was carried out on the woman, including a cheek swab, blood sample, and nail sample, though the order states this was not for obtaining suspect DNA.
Superintendent Chad Gillies, Tuggerah Lakes Police District Commander, said: "My priority at the moment now is to work through the investigation with detectives to understand exactly what happened and why it happened, and importantly, as well, providing welfare to all the police that attended last night and through the investigation."
Community Reaction
Gillies added: "Whenever a child is an alleged victim of violent crime and whenever a child is allegedly murdered, it strikes at the core of community. That's why it's absolutely important we work through this methodically, we try to understand what's happened, why it happened."
One neighbor described the boy as "a little angel" who was often seen playing with his red toy car and a Staffordshire bull terrier puppy. Another local called him "so happy go lucky, a really good kid."
Court Appearance
The woman is due to appear in court next on September 1.
