Man to appear in court after Mersey Gateway Bridge crash

A man is due to appear in court after a serious crash on the Mersey Gateway Bridge in Widnes on Monday, August 17. Police were called to the scene around 6.45pm following reports of a collision on the northbound carriageway of the A533 Mersey Gateway.

Three vehicles involved in the crash

Three vehicles—a black Ford Focus, a black Mercedes, and a grey Audi—were involved in the crash, which closed the road for several hours. There were no reports of any life-threatening injuries, but a number of casualties were treated by paramedics. Dramatic video footage shared with the ECHO showed the crash as it happened, leaving one vehicle flipped onto its roof in the middle of the road.

Driver charged and remanded

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 25-year-old man from Northwich, was arrested in relation to the incident. He was initially taken to hospital as a precautionary measure before being taken to police custody. Lewis Verdin, of College Way, Hartford, Northwich, has since been charged with driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop following a collision. The 25-year-old has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Chester Magistrates Court on Wednesday, August 19.
