The second day of the sentencing hearing for 30 individuals involved in the Ely riots commenced on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The violence erupted following the deaths of two teenage boys, Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, in an electric bike collision on May 22, 2023. Around 150 people participated in the riot, which involved hours of violence and vandalism on streets near Wilson Road in the western Cardiff suburb.
Background of the Riots
The fatal collision occurred when the two boys were riding an electric bike through the area. Their mothers attempted to reach them but were blocked by police. Large crowds from the close-knit community gathered, and shock turned to anger as rumors spread that police were responsible for the deaths. During the first day of sentencing on Monday, the court heard statements from police officers about the riot, including one officer who was set alight. Defendant Ryan Knight shouted from the dock, demanding acknowledgment of the deceased boys, leading Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke to order him to a cell.
Defendants Sentenced on Tuesday
Lee Robinson, 39, of Heol Deva, Caerau, was described by prosecutor Matthew Cobbe as an "aggressive focal point" who cheered as a petrol bomb was hurled at PC Zoe Lee. Robinson filmed himself during the riot, saying, "Murderers, killing people... The Ely riots of 2023." He has three previous convictions and was diagnosed with ADHD. His barrister, Harry Baker, noted Robinson maintains his innocence despite a jury conviction. Judge Lloyd-Clarke remanded him on unconditional bail for sentencing on June 17.
Callum O'Sullivan, 25, of Ely, pleaded guilty to rioting. He threw missiles at police and disguised himself with a t-shirt around his head. His barrister, Leah Pollard, said he has a learning difficulty, suffered childhood trauma, and is "ashamed of his actions." He was remanded on unconditional bail for sentencing on June 18.
Kyle Telemaque, now 20, of Deere Place, Ely, was 17 at the time. The court heard he was a "prolific missile thrower" who set items alight and threw them at police. Footage of his involvement was played in court.
Other defendants due for sentencing include Harvey James, Jasmine Smith, and Tyler Stapleton in the afternoon. The hearing adjourned for lunch and resumed at 2 PM.
