DUP Minister Says No Inkling of Donaldson's Abuse Before Arrest
DUP Minister: No Inkling of Donaldson's Abuse Before Arrest

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has stated that the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) had no prior knowledge of former leader Jeffrey Donaldson's abusive behaviour before his arrest on historical sex abuse charges. Lyons described Donaldson as 'duplicitous' and said there was 'no inkling' within the party about his propensity for exploitative or abusive conduct.

Lyons Denies Bryson Influence

Lyons also denied that loyalist activist Jamie Bryson has been exerting influence over Northern Ireland's largest unionist party. Bryson has claimed this week that he crafted policy positions for Donaldson and represented him at high-level meetings. Lyons countered that any such actions were not sanctioned by the DUP and were attributable solely to Donaldson.

Donaldson Convicted of Sexual Offences

On Monday, a jury at Newry Crown Court found Donaldson, 63, guilty of 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, against two women when they were children. DUP leader Gavin Robinson said the party was 'shocked' by Donaldson's 'filthy and vile' actions.

Questions About Wider Knowledge

Subsequent media reports have raised questions about how much was known within the DUP about Donaldson's conduct prior to his 2024 arrest. BBC Spotlight reported that some senior DUP figures were aware of another woman who had raised concerns about Donaldson's behaviour but did not wish to make a formal complaint. The programme also reported that two senior PSNI officers observed Donaldson entering a sauna in London that marketed itself as a meeting place for gay men in 2006, despite Donaldson referring to homosexuality as 'sinful' in the same year.

Lyons Calls for Lengthy Sentence

Speaking to the Press Association, Lyons said: 'This week has been important because victims have got justice. Jeffrey Donaldson is a vile and reprehensible being, and I am pleased that justice has been done.' He added: 'I want to be very clear – this is not something that I was aware of, and many journalists, and many other people that knew him a lot longer than I did, had no inkling about what is being talked about.' Lyons called for a lengthy sentence that reflects the seriousness of Donaldson's crimes and the trauma inflicted on his victims.

Bryson's Claims Rejected

Bryson told the BBC's Nolan programme that he was sent by Donaldson to Dublin to represent the DUP at a meeting with Irish government officials and that he crafted speeches and policy positions for the former leader. Lyons responded: 'That is certainly not something that I was aware of, and that also I can assure you will have come as a shock to many, many people within the party.' He emphasised that Bryson was not acting on behalf of the DUP.

Donaldson's legal representatives have been approached for comment.
