BBC Crime Drama Common in Liverpool Leaves Viewers Heartbroken

The 2014 BBC crime film Common, filmed in Liverpool, has been branded "bleak" and "powerful" by viewers, though it may have slipped under the radar for many. The 90-minute made-for-television drama has left some so "heartbroken" they say they could not watch it again.

Plot and Cast

Written by Jimmy McGovern and directed by David Blair, Common stars Nico Mirallegro as 17-year-old Johnjo O'Shea, who agrees to drive his older brother's friends to a pizza takeaway in his brother's car. Unbeknownst to Johnjo, one passenger intends to confront a rival there. A confrontation erupts, resulting in the fatal stabbing of Tommy Ward. Johnjo is charged as an accessory to murder under the doctrine of common purpose, a component of the UK's Joint Enterprise legal doctrine, which allows multiple people to be prosecuted for the same offense regardless of their roles.

The cast also includes Michelle Fairley and Harry Potter star Michael Gambon.

Inspiration from Real Case

McGovern drew inspiration from the real-life case of 16-year-old Jordan Cunliffe, who was sentenced to a minimum of 12 years for the murder of Garry Newlove under the same law. Cunliffe reportedly took no active role in the assault. The film chronicles the legal proceedings and the tensions between affected families.

Viewer and Critic Reactions

On Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer said: "Actor and storyline driven, this gritty British drama brings a new area of crime and punishment to light." Another wrote: "I thought this was a simple movie, but powerful all the same." A third added: "Very well made and acted, but so heartbreaking I never want to see it again."

Critics also praised the film. The Guardian described it as "a brutal and devastating drama" that is "bleak, powerful" and "thick with political intent," though noting this "occasionally robs it of its quality."

Common is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
