Austrian Parents Face Life in Prison for Torturing Three-Year-Old Son to Death
A mother and father accused of abusing their three-year-old son in what prosecutors have described as the 'most horrific way' have gone on trial in Austria. Kevin and Nathalie M are facing charges of cruelty, unlawful imprisonment, and murder, with a potential life sentence, as their trial commenced in Innsbruck on Monday.
Shocking Details of Prolonged Abuse Emerge
According to investigators, the parents deliberately tortured their son, Elias, over a period of five months before he died from severe malnutrition and dehydration in May 2024. The child was subjected to brutal treatment, including being beaten with a wooden spoon, locked in a drawer for up to 22 hours a day, and systematically starved and dehydrated.
Prosecutors allege that Elias was blinded, confined in total darkness, tied to a bathroom basin, and subjected to showers of boiling or freezing water. He was forced to sleep on a slatted bed frame without a mattress, and his hands and feet were bound with cable ties, sometimes while blindfolded.
Prosecutor Describes 'Dehumanizing' Treatment
Hansjörg Mayr, spokesperson for the Innsbruck public prosecutor's office, stated that the parents abused the child mentally and physically in an exceptionally horrific manner. 'They isolated the boy from the rest of family life and locked him away, completely dehumanized, humiliated, and frightened him,' Mayr said. Elias, who was born in Tyrol, Austria, died weighing only seven kilograms, less than half the typical weight for a child his age, due to months of malnutrition and dehydration.
Family Dynamics and Disturbing Motivations
The three-year-old, who had three sisters including a twin, was excluded from family activities. While his sisters were cared for and well-fed, Elias was starved. Prosecutors revealed that the parents, who were struggling financially, lived in a 'mystical fantasy world' where they believed an alleged demon inside the boy's body was responsible for their problems.
They documented their abuse through WhatsApp chats and emails, sharing pictures and videos of Elias's suffering. 'This created an outlet for themselves to vent and act out their sadistic tendencies,' Mayr added. The parents also filmed some of the torment and watched it live via a surveillance camera.
Confessions and Legal Proceedings
The mother has confessed to her actions, citing the alleged demon, while the father has previously confessed and expressed regret. However, the mother claimed Elias had been unwell with no appetite in recent weeks, though they had scheduled a doctor's appointment 'soon'.
Prosecutors noted that on the Friday before his death, the family celebrated their eldest daughter's birthday at McDonald's without Elias, and over the weekend, they attended a medieval festival in Kufstein while he was left behind.
Charges and Potential Sentences
The parents are remanded in custody under strong suspicion of murder by torture and omission. They face a life sentence for allegedly failing to provide adequate food and fluids for at least several weeks and not contacting a doctor despite his obvious health deterioration. The family had moved into an apartment in Ebbs, Kufstein, in September 2021, three years before Elias's death.
Elias's grandmother, 51, defended her son and daughter-in-law, telling Bild: 'They’re not murderers. We didn't see this coming. I raised my children well, there were never any problems. Elias was often with me; he was sickly. But what could I do? His parents are adults.'
