Alabama Man Arrested as Suspected Bosnian War Criminal, Neighbors Express Shock
In a startling development, a suspected Bosnian war criminal has been apprehended in Alabama, where he reportedly lived a quiet life raising chickens and selling eggs to Walmart. The arrest has sent shockwaves through his local community, with neighbors expressing disbelief at the allegations against him.
Details of the Arrest and Allegations
Hamdija Alukic, aged 70, was taken into custody by US Marshals in Mobile on Wednesday under an extradition warrant issued by Bosnia and Herzegovina. Federal court documents reveal that Alukic is accused of participating in two separate attacks during the Bosnian War in 1992, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
According to the legal filings, Alukic was allegedly a member of a Bosnian Muslim paramilitary group during the civil conflict that ravaged Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995. The specific incidents in question occurred on August 29, 1992, when he and his group entered the town of Kozarac.
Graphic Accounts of the Alleged Attacks
In the first attack, officials claim that Alukic ambushed a car shortly after dark as it entered the town. He and other members of the paramilitary group are said to have shot the driver and then set the vehicle ablaze with the body still inside. Photographs included in the court documents depict the burned-out car with a visible bullet hole, adding a chilling visual element to the allegations.
The second attack allegedly followed immediately, with the group targeting a nearby home. Court records indicate that the paramilitaries split into two parties and set fire to two different houses while people were inside, resulting in one fatality. Additional photos show the extensive damage inflicted upon the residences, underscoring the severity of the accusations.
Community Reaction and Legal Proceedings
Neighbors in Alabama were stunned to learn of Alukic's alleged past, describing him as a peaceful individual who led an unassuming life. One neighbor told local media, "That just completely blows my mind cause I never seen that coming, that’s pretty wild." Another added, "They had dogs, chickens and they would sell eggs to Walmart and stuff. They were always cool."
Authorities are now seeking Alukic's extradition to Bosnia and Herzegovina to stand trial for these alleged war crimes. Currently, he is being held at the Baldwin County jail pending the extradition process. In response, Alukic has filed a motion for bond, indicating the beginning of what could be a protracted legal battle.
This case highlights the long arm of international justice and the unexpected places where individuals accused of wartime atrocities may resurface, living seemingly ordinary lives far from the conflicts of their past.
