An eight-year-old boy who helped calm a disruptive passenger on a Jet2 flight, preventing the plane from being diverted, has been showered with gifts and rewarded with free flight vouchers. Phoenix Rose and his father James intervened when a woman began shouting on the flight from Izmir, Turkey, to the UK.
Heroic Actions Mid-Flight
Phoenix, from Salford, Greater Manchester, spoke to the woman, sat next to her, and spent hours showing her his football cards, singing, and asking about her family. This calmed her down, and the holiday flight did not need to divert. His father, James, 42, insisted that Phoenix is the "real hero."
Overwhelming Generosity
Since the incident, Phoenix has received thank-you cards and presents from strangers across the country and even overseas. Gifts include a games console from a stranger in the Netherlands, a Lego set, football kits, and toy vouchers. James described the outpouring as "like Christmas Day." However, Phoenix now wants people to stop sending gifts and instead donate to charity.
Speaking about the reaction, Phoenix said: "It has been brilliant." His father added: "When the first gift came, we thought it was nice for someone to do that, but since then it's been parcel after parcel. One of the things he wants to do is give the stuff away, so if people are in financial hardship or they know someone who might want one of these presents then they can get in touch."
Encouraging Kindness
Phoenix hopes his story encourages others to be kind in similar situations. His father recounted that the woman was "almost trying to smack the stewardesses," but at James's request, cabin staff moved her between him and his son, where Phoenix "bounced into action." The pilot personally thanked Phoenix, a Manchester United fan. Jet2 also praised the boy's actions, stating: "I want to say a massive thank you to you both on behalf of everybody at Jet2. What you did was absolutely fantastic."
