A teenage prison officer has been sentenced to prison after developing an inappropriate relationship with an inmate and smuggling prohibited items into HMP Hindley.
Megan Lyth, 19, was described as "immature and vulnerable" by her own defence counsel after becoming romantically involved with a prisoner at the Category C facility in Wigan. The relationship came to light after prison authorities discovered intimate letters and messages between the pair.
From Guard to Lawbreaker
Lyth, who had only begun her career at the prison in October 2022, quickly crossed professional boundaries. The court heard how she exchanged letters with the inmate containing explicit content and personal photographs.
Her misconduct escalated when she began smuggling contraband into the prison facility. Among the prohibited items she brought in were two mobile phones and chargers - highly sought-after commodities within the prison system that can facilitate further criminal activity.
The Downfall and Sentence
The relationship and smuggling operation unraveled when prison staff intercepted communications between Lyth and the inmate. An investigation was launched, leading to her arrest and prosecution.
At Bolton Crown Court, Lyth pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office. The judge sentenced her to 14 months in a young offenders institution, highlighting the serious breach of trust inherent in her position.
Warning to Other Officers
This case serves as a stark reminder of the professional boundaries required of prison staff. A Prison Service spokesperson stated: "We expect the highest standards from our prison officers and when this is not met, we take decisive action."
The incident has raised questions about the support and supervision provided to young, inexperienced staff working in challenging prison environments.
