Serial killer Rose West's health is said to have deteriorated, and the 72-year-old is 'on her last legs,' a source has claimed. West, who is serving a whole-life sentence for the rape and murder of 10 women and girls in Gloucester with husband Fred, is said to be worse for wear.
She is allegedly unable to walk or leave the prison without being assisted if there were an emergency. Officials at HMP New Hall in West Yorkshire, where West has been locked up, have put a personal evacuation plan in place, a source told the Sun.
Rare evacuation plan in place
Her worsened condition prompted staff at the high-security prison to have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) in place for her. The source claimed: 'Rose is in a really bad way and can now barely move.'
'The fact she has this PEEP in place shows what a poor state her health is in. Having a PEEP is extremely rare and officers only use them for those in the most danger if there is an emergency.'
Staff allegedly are not happy about having to use PEEP plans because it 'creates paperwork and potentially puts officers in danger who would have to help her,' the insider alleged. The 'customised' escape plan also means particular staff are assigned to help her 'if she is in danger.' West is said to have a wheelchair on hand, which staff would use to move the House of Horrors killer if they had to.
Health decline and duty of care
The source continued: 'But they owe her a duty of care, despite who she is. And people have been talking about how West is on her last legs and does not have long left because of her health. She cannot leave her wing and is also resigned to dying in jail.'
West was convicted in 1995 after her and husband Fred West's horrific crimes were discovered, the majority of which took place at 25 Cromwell Street. A Prison Service spokesperson told Metro in a statement: 'Rose West's crimes were horrific, and she will rightly spend the rest of her life behind bars.'
