Man Jailed for £11K Tobacco Theft Spree Across Three Counties

Michael Mongan, a 27-year-old man from Birmingham with no fixed address, has been sentenced to 29 months in prison for a month-long crime spree that netted more than £11,000 worth of cigarettes and tobacco from convenience stores across England and Wales. The thefts occurred between February 7 and March 7, 2026, targeting shops in Cambridgeshire, Wrexham, Cheshire, and Staffordshire.

Facial Recognition Leads to Arrest

According to Cheshire Police, Mongan was identified as the culprit through facial recognition technology after extensive CCTV enquiries. The force noted that cross-border collaboration was key to building the case against him. Detective Constable James Rowley said: "Following extensive CCTV enquiries and cross border enquiries, we were able to identify Mongan as one of two males who had targeted the shops in a month-long spree. Now he is paying the price for his actions and will spend the foreseeable future behind bars."

Details of the Thefts

Mongan's first theft occurred on February 7, when he stole approximately £2,600 worth of tobacco and cigarettes from a One Stop Shop in Ely, Cambridgeshire. On February 19, he targeted the Overton convenience shop in Wrexham, taking £3,900 worth of cigarettes. His most prolific day was February 25, when he stole £3,173 worth of goods from the Co-Op in Audlem, Cheshire, and £1,438 worth of cigarettes and tobacco from the Co-Op on Parkgate Lane in Knutsford.
