Nicholas Henry, the man convicted of battering his neighbour with a shovel before stabbing him to death, has died behind bars. Henry, 49, died at HMP Low Moss on August 27.
Murder in Airdrie
Henry attacked Daniel Greer in Airdrie on October 17, 2020. The then 45-year-old stabbed the 33-year-old nine times in the body in his garden in the early hours of the morning.
Henry then dragged Mr Greer's body back into his own home, where his dad found his body two days later. Henry told a pal: "Don't worry you won't be seeing him again, he's gone."
Evidence in court
In court, a neighbour explained how she had been awoken during the night. She added: "I saw Nicholas in my garden with Daniel who had his hand on his head saying 'leave me, leave me'."
The 64-year-old stated that she also saw Henry batter Mr Greer with a shovel while he was on the ground and stamp on him.
Conviction and sentence
Henry was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow with the murder of Mr Greer in September 2022 and sentenced to life in jail with a minimum of 21 years. During the trial, the court was told how Henry was previously sentenced to 12 years in 2011 for trying to kill a man in Cumbernauld, almost chopping off his hand.
Fatal Accident Inquiry
A Fatal Accident Inquiry is to be held into Henry's death. Fatal Accident Inquiries are mandatory in the deaths of people who were under the care of the state at the time of their deaths.
The purpose of a Fatal Accident Inquiry includes determining the cause of death; the circumstances in which the death occurred; and to establish what steps, if any, could have been taken to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.
