Emergency services rushed to a fire in a restaurant basement on John William Street in Huddersfield town centre on Wednesday evening. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that multiple crews attended the scene after reports of smoke and a possible fire at around 9:30 pm.
The fire broke out in the basement of a four-storey building, which houses a restaurant on the ground floor with accommodation above. Firefighters used eight breathing apparatuses, four hose reels, and one large jet to bring the blaze under control. A 'make pumps eight' order was issued, calling for additional fire engines and personnel.
Police cordoned off the area and closed nearby roads to allow emergency services to operate. Paramedics were also on standby, but no injuries have been reported. A local man named Josh told YorkshireLive that he was informed no one was inside the building when the fire started.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue later confirmed the fire was extinguished and the scene had been made safe. The incident is now closed. Unconfirmed reports suggested the fire may have spread to a second building, but this has not been verified.
