A nine-year-old girl has died from injuries sustained in a car crash that also claimed her mother's life in Co Cavan last week.
Irena (Ira) Mereacre had been in a critical condition following the collision on Friday, 24 July 2026, which killed her mother, Nell Raven, 53. The girl died on Tuesday in Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.
Collision details
The crash occurred on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock, at approximately 4.30pm on Friday. The car, driven by Ms Raven, collided with a flatbed van. Ms Raven, an English-born writer and journalist who had recently been granted Irish citizenship, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she died on Tuesday.
Garda investigation and appeal
Gardaí continue to investigate the fatal road traffic collision. In a statement, they said: "Gardaí continue to investigate a fatal road traffic collision on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock, Co. Cavan, on Friday 24th July 2026. The collision involved a car and a flatbed van, and occurred after 4.30pm (approximately)."
"The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 50s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the car, a female juvenile child, was removed from the scene to Temple Street Hospital, where she passed away this afternoon, Tuesday 28th July 2026."
They are appealing for witnesses, particularly road users who were in the area between 4:15pm and 5:00pm on Friday and may have dash-cam footage.
