After months of eager anticipation, a powerful new six-part drama arrives on BBC One screens this evening. 'Waiting For The Out' makes its debut on Saturday, January 3, at 9.30pm, promising viewers a raw and thought-provoking journey into the world of a men's prison.
A Story of Redemption and Reflection Behind Bars
The series centres on Dan, a character brought to life by BAFTA-nominated actor Josh Finan. Dan begins teaching lessons to inmates at a correctional facility, exploring profound themes like power, freedom, and fortune. These age-old philosophical questions take on a stark new meaning within the prison walls, sparking both enthusiasm and conflict among the men he tutors.
As the sessions progress, Dan is forced to turn the mirror on himself. Audiences will learn that his own father, played by Alex Fearns, is incarcerated, alongside his brother Lee (Stephen Wight) and uncle Frank (Phil Daniels). While Dan chose a different path in life, his intense experience working with prisoners leads him to a haunting personal question: does he, too, deserve to be behind bars?
Inspired by a 'Deeply Moving' Memoir
The drama draws its authentic heart from Andy West's critically acclaimed memoir, 'The Life Inside'. The book has been praised by critics as "authentic", "deeply moving", and "unforgettable", providing a solid foundation for the television adaptation.
Although the series has not yet aired, early reviews have already described it as "sensational" and "poignant". Lead actor Josh Finan said he was immediately "drawn in" upon learning about the project, recognising its unique perspective.
A Family Affair Filmed in Liverpool
The production was filmed in Liverpool, close to Finan's childhood home, which added a layer of personal connection. "I knew some of the crew from previous jobs and that community feeling is so nice to have at work," Josh revealed. The shoot even became a family event, with his parents and sister securing small cameo roles in a christening scene towards the end of the series.
Hinting at the show's compelling narrative scope, Finan remarked, "I don't think I've seen a drama that focuses just as much - if not more - on what happens for those beyond the prison walls as well as inmates within them."
'Waiting For The Out' begins its six-part run on BBC One on January 3 at 9.30pm.
