A California mother is recovering after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs while walking along a levee in Stockton. Dorrie Reyes sustained between 150 and 200 lacerations and puncture wounds across her body during the attack on April 23.
Reyes was surrounded by seven to nine dogs, including German shepherds and mixed breeds, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family. She had been filming the animals on her phone and shouting for help moments before the attack. A nearby couple heard her cries and managed to drive the dogs away.
Reyes was rushed to hospital, where she spent six hours in surgery and lost a significant amount of blood. She is now recovering at a rehabilitation facility. Her family is raising funds to cover medical and legal costs, as they plan to pursue legal action over the incident.
Other Stockton residents have reported similar encounters with stray dogs in the area. Erica Navarrete told 9News she had seen five or six dogs that almost attacked her on a nearby trail. She expressed concern for children and families using the area.
Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said public safety is a top priority and that the city is expanding spay-and-neuter services to address the stray dog problem. He called on residents to act responsibly as pet owners.
