A 36-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car that was being chased by police in Leeds. The collision happened on Beckett Street at 9.52am on 29 October, two minutes after a black Vauxhall Corsa failed to stop for officers on Harehills Road.
Police pursuit and collision
West Yorkshire Police said a pursuit was authorised after the Corsa failed to stop at 9.50am. The vehicle then struck a female pedestrian on Beckett Street. The driver did not stop at the scene, and officers involved in the pursuit gave emergency medical attention to the victim.
The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries but later died. The Corsa was found abandoned on nearby Nippet Lane, and police said at least two people in the vehicle had fled the scene.
Investigation and IOPC referral
The car has been seized and will be forensically examined. Enquiries are ongoing to locate the occupants. The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team has launched an investigation and is appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to come forward.
West Yorkshire Police said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) "due to prior police contact", making a mandatory referral.
