Wife Shoots Husband Over Annoyance After Surgery

A 65-year-old Alabama woman is in custody after allegedly confessing to fatally shooting her husband because she grew frustrated with his constant attention during her recovery from open heart surgery.

Incident Details

Sheri Mitchell-Clutts called 911 just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday to report that her husband, Timothy Clutts, had been shot. When deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office arrived at the couple's home in Russellville, they found the 69-year-old man dead in a recliner from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Initially, Mitchell-Clutts told dispatchers she had felt threatened throughout the day. However, she later admitted to shooting her husband of 15 years, stating she had simply become annoyed with him, according to Sheriff Shannon Oliver.

Recovery and Alleged Motive

Mitchell-Clutts reportedly informed investigators that she had undergone open heart surgery approximately two weeks before the shooting. During her recovery, her husband repeatedly came to her room, which irritated her. She allegedly grabbed a handgun, waited for him to return, and then went looking for him. She found him in a recliner and shot him once in the chest.

“Her demeanor seemed obviously upset from what little interaction I had with her at the scene, but you never know what’s going through somebody’s mind,” Sheriff Oliver said.

Investigation and Charges

Investigators are examining the couple's history and possible motives. Sheriff Oliver noted that they have reviewed call logs going back six years and found no domestic-related calls at the residence. “We’re going through at this time, but as of right now, there’s, that we can find, no domestic related calls there,” he stated.

Mitchell-Clutts has been charged with murder and is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail.
