Pest control experts are urging Britons to check unusual places for wasp nests after a surge in activity. Rentokil Pest Control reported a 61% year-on-year increase in residential wasp nest call-outs, with nests discovered in Wellington boots, handbags, sofas, car bonnets, chimney stacks, and even a child's cuddly toy.
Paul Blackhurst, Head of Technical Academy at Rentokil Pest Control, explained that queen wasps emerge from hibernation as temperatures rise. 'They're not fussy about where they set up home, and anywhere warm, sheltered and undisturbed will do,' he said. 'What starts as a small nest in spring can quickly develop into a large, highly active colony by the height of summer.'
Blackhurst warned against dangerous DIY removal methods seen on social media, noting that nearly half of Brits turn to online platforms for pest advice. 'Tackling a wasp nest yourself can be extremely dangerous. Disturbing a nest may trigger aggressive behaviour and increase the risk of multiple stings,' he said.
Rentokil advises homeowners to arrange professional treatment if they suspect a nest, particularly as colonies grow larger and more defensive during summer. Early identification and treatment are key to safe management.
