Brown, who reportedly has schizophrenia, told his sister from jail that Zarutska had been trying to read his mind. Experts say the case highlights failures in the US mental health system, but right-wing commentators have focused instead on the criminal justice system and racial narratives.
Donald Trump called for the death penalty for Brown, describing him as an 'animal'. Vice-President JD Vance blamed 'weak politicians' for releasing Brown from prison. Elon Musk has posted dozens of times about the story, suggesting the media would have covered it more if the races were reversed. Some far-right accounts have falsely claimed Brown targeted Zarutska because she was white.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced federal charges against Brown, despite the possibility he may be found not guilty by reason of insanity. Emmitt Riley, a politics professor at Sewanee, said the case has been politicised with racial overtones, noting Trump's history of calling for the death penalty for Black and brown people.
