
DURHAM - A massive police manhunt is underway across Northeast England for 44-year-old Neal Thompson, wanted in connection with the death of Dezi Freeman, whose body was tragically discovered in the River Wear.
Durham Constabulary has issued an urgent public appeal, warning residents not to approach Thompson but to immediately contact authorities if spotted. The search intensified after Freeman's body was recovered from the river near Sunderland Bridge on Tuesday afternoon.
A Community on Edge
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Browell confirmed the grim discovery, stating: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with Dezi's family and friends at this extremely difficult time."
Police were initially called to the Sunderland Bridge area around 4:30 PM Tuesday following concerns for a person's safety. The subsequent search operation led to the recovery of Freeman's body, prompting the launch of a murder investigation.
Intensive Search Operation
Thompson, described as approximately 5' 9" tall with short brown hair, is believed to have connections throughout County Durham and Northeast England. Authorities have deployed significant resources, including specialist search teams and police divers, to locate the suspect.
"We have a team of dedicated officers working around the clock to locate Neal Thompson and would urge anyone with information on his whereabouts to get in touch," DCI Browell emphasized.
