A collision involving a police car on Tynemouth Road in Howdon has resulted in two people being taken to hospital, with a large emergency services presence and a cordon in place.
The crash occurred shortly before 9.15am today, prompting a major 999 response. Alongside Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and North East Ambulance Service attended the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 9.15am today (Wednesday), we responded to a report of a collision involving a police car on Tynemouth Road in Howdon. Emergency services are currently in attendance.”
An NEAS spokesperson added: “We were called to a road traffic collision on Tynemouth Road, at 9.16am. We dispatched two double crewed ambulances, a duty officer and two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team. Two patients were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.”
Scene observations and witness account
A reporter at the scene described the aftermath: “There was a large emergency services response on Tynemouth road earlier, with three fire engines blocking the road. The fire brigade has now left the scene. A police cordon has also been erected on the street.”
He added: “Police officers are currently conducting inquiries and two recovery vehicles have arrived on the street. One damaged car remains on road, as does a police car, which also appears to be damaged on the front end.”
One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the incident: “The police car was flying down the road and it hit a car that was reversing out. It’s then gone into a couple of parked cars.”
Recovery underway
Vehicle recovery is now in progress, with the damaged police car and other involved vehicles being removed. A comment from TWFRS regarding firefighters' involvement is awaited.
