Two people have been killed and several others injured after a planned fight at a park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, escalated into a mass shooting, according to police.
Officers were called to Leinbach Park, near Jefferson Middle School, shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday following reports of a fight. The altercation then escalated into multiple people firing at each other, authorities said.
The Winston-Salem Police Department confirmed there were multiple victims but did not provide an exact number. Several suspects remained at large more than two hours after the incident. Police added that some of those involved were juveniles and that efforts were ongoing to account for everyone due to the number of people involved.
Local news station WFMY reported that at least three people were taken to hospital, but their conditions have not been disclosed. Area schools were not placed on lockdown and classes continued as normal, police said.
Authorities urged nearby residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity. Officers began leaving the scene shortly after 1 p.m., though several roads remained closed and Leinbach Park will stay shut until further notice. Police described the incident as isolated and said it remains under investigation.
