The family of a 14-year-old boy who died following a tragic farm accident have paid a heartfelt tribute to their "cheeky chappie" who was "always smiling".
A Tragic Incident on a County Durham Farm
Aaron Anderson, from Consett, sustained life-threatening injuries when a John Deere Gator overturned at a farm near Burnopfield, County Durham, on December 21. Despite receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, the teenager passed away on Boxing Day.
Durham Police were called to the scene at 8.25pm on December 21. Officers performed life-saving first aid on two seriously injured teenagers at the location. In a distressing turn of events, the force reported that all four tyres of their police vehicle were vandalised in the aftermath of the incident.
A Family's Loving Tribute
In a tribute released through Durham Police, Aaron's grieving family painted a picture of a vibrant and hardworking young man. They described him as a "cheeky chappie who was always smiling and would never fail to brighten up your day".
"He was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him," the family statement continued.
They highlighted his passion for farm life, stating: "Aaron was always happiest working on farms and fixing trucks. Even at the age of 14 he had an amazing work ethic and already had two apprenticeship offers."
Expressing their profound grief and gratitude, they added: "Although we are saddened about the life he will never have, we are so thankful for the life he has lived and will cherish all the happy memories he left us with."
Community Support and Police Investigation
The family thanked the local community for its overwhelming support, as well as the emergency services. "We would also like to thank the ambulance service, police, and most importantly the amazing staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and charities who have provided us with so much comfort in this difficult time," they said.
They also extended their thoughts to others affected by the tragedy and requested privacy to grieve.
A 13-year-old boy who was also seriously injured in the same incident is now recovering at home after receiving hospital treatment.
Durham Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
