A Toronto police officer has been shot dead while executing a search warrant linked to a March attack on the US consulate, according to Police Chief Myron Demkiw. Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was shot during an early-morning raid in the north-west of the city and later died in hospital.
The warrant was connected to several shootings, including the incident at the United States consulate, Demkiw said. One suspect, 19-year-old Zara Jabbi, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Police have urged the public to call 911 immediately if they see him.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her condolences, noting she has known the officer's mother for 20 years. The March attack on the US consulate involved two men firing multiple rounds at the empty diplomatic building before sunrise, causing no injuries but prompting US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra to describe it as “deeply troubling”.
Canada’s federal police are investigating whether the consulate shooting constitutes a terrorist event.
