Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. The 42-year-old, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was detained at Luton airport on Monday evening following an alleged assault at St Pancras station in London a week earlier.
British Transport Police confirmed that the man arrested had been bailed pending further inquiries until 2 September. The incident occurred on 28 July at around 8.40pm, when police responded to reports of an assault. The alleged victim, a 64-year-old man, suffered serious head injuries and required hospital treatment, being discharged two days later.
Following the incident, Robinson flew to Tenerife, Spain, in the early hours of 29 July, then travelled to Faro, Portugal, before returning to the UK on Monday, where police were waiting. Video footage from the scene shows the 64-year-old on the ground, with Robinson appearing to claim self-defence, though the video does not show how the man came to be injured.
Robinson, a former leader of the English Defence League, is described by the monitoring group Hope Not Hate as the “best-known far-right extremist in Britain”. Police noted that he had been “wanted for questioning” after leaving the country. Under normal practice, British police do not name suspects until they are charged.
