A tragic house fire in Melbourne has claimed the life of a three-year-old boy, while his father was rushed to hospital with severe burns after attempting to rescue him. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday on Newbury Street.
Details of the Incident
Jordan Dashwood, aged three, was at home with his parents and a sibling when the fire engulfed their residence around midnight. His father, Jeremy Dashwood, 40, smashed a window to re-enter the house but emerged with his clothing ablaze. Victoria police confirmed that Mr. Dashwood was taken to hospital with serious burns. Tragically, Jordan and two family dogs perished in the blaze. Jordan's 11-year-old brother managed to escape through a window, according to local reports.
Investigation Underway
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Anthony Pearce stated that investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire. "It's too early to tell; there's a lot of investigation both at the scene and engaging with people to understand what happened," he said. He described the scene as dangerous due to loose and broken tiles on the roof, making it unsafe to walk through.
Tributes and Community Support
Tributes have poured in for Jordan on social media, and neighbours have left flowers outside the house. His grandmother, Tracie Long, expressed her grief: "I just miss that little man already; he's so precious. He was so delightful, a bubble of energy. He was a nanny's boy. I'm going to miss that little boy." Ms. Long said her daughter was home with her partner and children when the fire broke out. "She heard a bang, and that was it; they had to get out. They tried to get the baby but couldn't," she told ABC News.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established by family friend Jardine Jackson to assist with funeral expenses and help the family rebuild their lives. "Little Jordan was a bright light in this world, full of innocent joy, and his absence leaves a void that can never be filled," Ms. Jackson wrote. "In a single night, this family's entire world was reduced to ashes. They did not just lose their home; they lost their precious little boy, their loyal pets, their memories."
The Victoria Fire Department reported that 40 firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control after 1 a.m. Firefighters remained at the scene on Monday to ensure the area's safety.
