Two charity shops in Hull were targeted by thieves in a late-night burglary spree, leaving cancer patients and military veterans among the victims.
Intruders broke into the Macmillan Cancer Support shop on Jameson Street and the Help for Heroes store on Prospect Street between 11pm on Tuesday and 7am on Wednesday, making off with more than £1,000 in cash.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Humberside Police have launched an investigation into the incidents and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
"These were callous crimes targeting organisations that rely on public generosity to support vulnerable people," a police spokesperson said.
Charities Respond
A Macmillan Cancer Support representative expressed disappointment at the theft, stating: "Every penny stolen was meant to help people living with cancer. This money could have paid for vital support services."
Help for Heroes similarly condemned the break-in, with a spokesperson saying: "We're devastated that funds meant to support wounded veterans have been taken in this way."
Security Measures Under Review
Both charities have stated they will be reviewing their security arrangements in light of the burglaries.
The crimes come at a particularly difficult time for charities, many of which have seen donations decline due to the cost of living crisis.
