Three suffer permanent vision loss from recalled Thermos lids in US

About 8 million Thermos containers are being recalled in the United States after reports of serious injuries, including three cases of permanent vision loss when lids forcefully ejected upon opening.

The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), covers approximately 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles. The issue arises when food or drinks are left inside for too long, causing pressure to build up. When opened, the stopper can suddenly eject, posing an impact and laceration hazard.

Thermos has received 27 reports of stoppers ejecting and striking users, resulting in injuries requiring medical treatment. Three individuals suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye, the CPSC said.

The affected models include the 16-ounce (SK3000) and 24-ounce (SK3020) Stainless King Food Jars manufactured before July 2023, and all 40-ounce Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles (SK3010). Consumers can check the model number on the bottom of the container.

The products were sold in-store and online at retailers including Target, Walmart, and Amazon, as well as on the Thermos website, from March 2008 to July 2024, priced at around $30. Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled items and contact Thermos for a free replacement stopper or bottle.
