Approximately 8 million Thermos containers are being recalled across the United States following reports of severe injuries, including three individuals who suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by forcefully ejecting stoppers.
Recall Details
The recall, announced Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), covers about 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles. The issue lies in the lid design: when food or drinks are left inside for extended periods, pressure can build up, causing the stopper to suddenly and forcefully eject upon opening, creating a serious impact and laceration hazard.
Affected Products
The recall specifically includes:
- Stainless King Food Jars in 16-ounce (model SK3000) and 24-ounce (model SK3020) sizes, manufactured before July 2023.
- Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles in 40-ounce (model SK3010), regardless of manufacture date.
Consumers can identify affected products by checking the model number printed on the bottom of the container.
Injury Reports
Thermos has received 27 reports of stoppers ejecting and striking users, causing injuries and cuts that required medical treatment. In the most severe cases, three individuals experienced permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye, according to the CPSC. The Independent has contacted Thermos for comment.
Where and When Were They Sold?
The recalled products were sold in-store and online at major retailers including Target, Walmart, and Amazon, as well as on the Thermos website. They retailed for approximately $30 and were sold between March 2008 and July 2024.
Consumer Action Required
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled Thermos containers immediately and contact the company for a free remedy. Depending on the product:
- For SK3000 and SK3020 Food Jars: Discard the stopper and send Thermos a photo showing it has been thrown away to receive a replacement pressure-relief stopper.
- For SK3010 Bottles: Return the entire product using a company-provided prepaid shipping label to receive a new bottle.
