Two teenage boys have been charged with first-degree murder following the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old congressional intern in Washington DC, in a brutal attack that has horrified the US political establishment.
The victim, identified as Jaylon McKenzie, was killed on the evening of 4th September in the city's bustling Navy Yard neighbourhood, just blocks from the US Capitol. The two suspects, aged 16 and 17, were apprehended by Metropolitan Police Department officers following a swift investigation.
A Promising Life Cut Short
McKenzie, hailing from Illinois, was described as a bright and dedicated young man with a promising future in public service. He was interning for a member of Congress, immersing himself in the workings of American democracy. His death has been met with an outpouring of grief from lawmakers and colleagues on Capitol Hill.
Details of the Attack Emerge
According to court documents, the attack occurred around 11:30 PM. Preliminary evidence suggests the stabbing was the result of an attempted robbery that escalated tragically. MPD detectives, using CCTV footage and witness statements, were able to quickly identify and track down the two juvenile suspects.
Both are being charged as adults due to the severity of the crime. The 17-year-old suspect faces an additional charge of assault with intent to rob.
