A prom night celebration in northwest Indiana turned into a tragedy early Sunday morning when one teenager was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at an after-party. The incident occurred in Pine Township, where high school students from the Michigan City School District had gathered following their prom on Saturday evening.
Details of the Shooting
The Porter County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire at a residence around 11 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased male teen, an 18-year-old woman, and another male teen suffering from gunshot wounds. The deceased has been identified as 17-year-old Javon Townsend, according to ABC7 Chicago. The La Porte County Coroner's Office confirmed that Townsend was shot three times and later died at Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City.
Neighbor Adam Oszuscik described hearing a barrage of gunfire. "I heard about 25-30 shots," he told WGN-TV. He then witnessed chaos as partygoers fled the scene. "I came out here and there were cars lined up on both sides of the road from that end to this end. Every one of the cars were trying to get out of here and there were just tons of kids running all over the yard," Oszuscik recounted.
Another neighbor, Kimberly Horn, discovered that a bullet had penetrated her front door. She had been watching a television show featuring gunfire, which initially masked the real shots. "I turned on the living room light, and then you could see the bullet was on my carpet. What does that feel like? Well, that was kind of scary," she told Fox 32 Chicago.
Investigation and Community Response
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Porter County Sheriff's Office stated that the incident appears to be an isolated event with no ongoing threat to the community. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities continue to investigate.
The Michigan City School District released a statement acknowledging the tragedy. "Our thoughts are with the students, families, and everyone impacted during this difficult time," the district said, noting that the off-campus incident involved several high school students following prom activities.
