A 17-year-old boy has died following a disturbance in Glasgow, leaving residents in the Lambhill area shocked and heartbroken. Police were called to Ashgill Road at 6pm on Wednesday, October 14, after reports of an incident, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 22-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the incident, and police remain in the area carrying out inquiries. A blue forensic tent has been erected on the street, alongside a large cordon with police cars in attendance. Forensic officers and hazmat teams in full-body white suits, masks, and gloves have been seen pacing the street.
Residents describe shock and fear
Locals told the Record they have been left "heartbroken" by the teen's passing, adding that the street has been "eerily quiet" today. One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "A teenage boy's life has been ruined. I'm shocked. I wasn't aware of any activity last night and only knew something happened when I saw the cordon today."
A grandmother told how she is now scared to let her grandchildren play out on the streets. She said: "It's tragic. The boy had his whole life ahead of him. It's a real shame. I'm scared to let my grandkids out now. I've told them if anyone has a weapon, to walk away. The police haven't been round the doors so we don't know anything more. It's eerily quiet."
Community reacts to the tragedy
Another local said they were aware of a "commotion" last night but assumed it was a road accident. They said: "If something like this had happened when my children were school age, I would've moved. I've lived here my whole life and there's barely any trouble. I feel for the boy and his family."
Another resident admitted they often leave their door unlocked due to feeling safe in the area, but will now lock them. They said: "A neighbour down the street alerted me to the incident last night. They panicked because they have young children. I never heard or saw anything but I'm surprised as this is normally a very quiet street."
Police appeal and ongoing inquiries
Chief Inspector Mhairi Crawford said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died at what is a very difficult time for them. I am aware of the impact this kind of incident can have on our communities and would like to reassure everyone that extensive enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with concerns can speak to an officer at the scene or contact us via 101."
A police presence is expected to remain in the area for some time while inquiries are carried out.
