An 18-year-old man has died after plunging from a sixth-floor balcony at the Mercure Hotel in Spring Hill, Brisbane, while attempting to flee from police on Saturday evening.
Incident Details
Police arrived at the hotel around 5:50pm seeking four individuals wanted in connection with a series of property-related thefts across the city. Acting Chief Superintendent Simon Tayler stated that officers identified the group on level six, made entry, and identified themselves as police. The teenager then fled and went off the balcony, sustaining critical injuries. Emergency responders attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful.
Police Response
Supt Tayler described the scene as "exceptionally confronting" for emergency personnel. The teen's family has been offered support by Queensland Police's welfare team. No charges have been laid at this stage.
Investigation
The death has automatically triggered an investigation by the Ethical Standards Command, which is also subject to independent oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC). The state coroner has been notified. Supt Tayler emphasised the importance of independent scrutiny: "The whole idea of having Ethical Standards, CCC and the State Coroner over the top is for them to take an independent lens to look at it and make sure that what we did complied with everything as best we can."
Hotel Statement
Mercure Hotels declined to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation. The hotel's website advertises its "elevated location above Brisbane city with balconies in every room."
