A teenage boy has appeared in court accused of murdering his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend and attempting to kill her mother in a violent attack at their family home.
Court Appearance and Charges
Cameron Cheng, 18, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court via videolink for a preliminary hearing. Dressed in a grey tracksuit, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address during the brief proceedings.
The defendant faces three serious charges: the murder of teenager Lainie Williams, the attempted murder of her mother Rhian Stephens, 38, and possession of a bladed article. Cheng did not enter pleas to any of the charges during this hearing.
Family members of the victims were present in court to witness the proceedings. The British national from Newbridge, Gwent, was remanded into custody and will next appear on December 12.
Tragic Events in Cefn Fforest
The alleged attacks occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning at the family home on Wheatley Place in Cefn Fforest, South Wales. Armed police were called to the three-bedroom former council house following reports of violence.
Despite paramedics arriving via air ambulance, Lainie Williams was pronounced dead at the scene after being attacked in her bedroom around 7.15am.
Her mother, Rhian Stephens, suffered serious injuries during the alleged attack but has since been discharged from Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. The mother-of-two was released after receiving treatment for her wounds.
