A man and a woman have been arrested in Sydney following a dramatic police operation, charged with multiple offences including online child abuse and bestiality. The pair, aged 31 and 24, were taken into custody after a tip-off from the US Department of Homeland Security.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege the man was identified after US authorities alerted them to someone accessing, soliciting, and transmitting child abuse material online. Electronic devices belonging to both individuals were seized and found to contain child abuse material, leading to further charges.
Detective Sergeant Navi Pandher emphasised the commitment of the AFP and international partners to protecting children. 'Anyone who views or shares this material creates the demand for real children to be sexually abused and exploited,' he said. 'We are working tirelessly to keep children safe and identify and prosecute anyone contributing to their harm.'
The couple refused bail during a brief court appearance on Wednesday and are set to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday. They face charges including possession and control of child abuse material, transmitting such material via a carriage service, and possession of bestiality material. If convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
