Two Starbucks employees working at Manchester Airport have accused Greater Manchester Police (GMP) of violating their human rights after being detained for nearly 20 hours without charge. The incident stemmed from an alleged till discrepancy at the airport branch.
The workers, a man and a woman, were taken into custody after airport security flagged suspicious activity. According to the employees, they were held incommunicado, denied access to legal representation, and subjected to prolonged questioning without clear justification.
Legal Action Looms
Legal representatives for the pair have confirmed they are preparing a formal complaint against GMP, citing potential breaches of the Human Rights Act. "The treatment of my clients was disproportionate and unlawful," stated their solicitor. "Being held for such an extended period without charge, especially over a minor till issue, raises serious concerns."
Police Response
GMP defended their actions, stating the detention was necessary for a "thorough investigation." A spokesperson said, "We take all reports of financial irregularities seriously, particularly in secure environments like airports. Our officers followed standard procedures."
Starbucks UK has launched an internal review of the incident but declined further comment while legal proceedings are ongoing.
