Firefighters rescue six from burning block of flats in Woolwich
Six people were rescued from a three-storey block of flats in Woolwich, south-east London, after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning. Five adults and a child were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received the first of 26 calls at 1:35 am and mobilised eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters to the scene on Edge Hill. The blaze was brought under control at 3:59 am.
Evacuation and damage
Around 10 people were evacuated from the building, while six were rescued by firefighters. The LFB reported that multiple flats were damaged by the heat of the fire, and approximately three garages and two vehicles in the surrounding area were completely destroyed.
Fire crews from Plumstead, East Greenwich, Eltham, and other surrounding fire stations responded to the incident.
Cause under investigation
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the LFB. No further details have been released at this time.
