Police in Ireland are investigating the shooting death of Mark Cullen, a 39-year-old father who bled to death after being shot in the leg in what sources describe as a punishment shooting gone wrong. The incident occurred on Patrician Park, a small street off Kill Avenue in Dun Laoghaire, south Dublin, at approximately 8:30 am on Sunday, 5 July 2026.
Details of the Shooting
Mr. Cullen, from nearby Shankill, had been released from prison just two weeks prior. He went to a prearranged meeting in a side street where he was shot once in the leg. The bullet severed an artery, causing massive blood loss. A source said: "In as much as a shooting can be accidental, this seems to be it." Another source confirmed: "He bled out."
Gardai believe the attacker did not intend to kill Mr. Cullen. "It looks like there was no intention to kill him," a source said. "He was shot in the leg, stumbled out on to the street and died. It happened very quickly."
Investigation and Theories
Officers are examining several theories, including that Mr. Cullen died in a punishment shooting gone wrong. They are also investigating whether he was involved in a fight with a man who then pulled out a pistol and shot him. Mr. Cullen was not regarded as a major criminal but was believed to be connected to a low-level crime gang involved in drugs. He was a repeat offender who had recently served a prison sentence for producing an article.
A source said: "He was not a serious player, you would not call him a gangster, but he had connections to a local outfit."
Police Appeal
Gardai have appealed for witnesses. A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed, and an Incident Room has been established at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station. The scene remains preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. Road closures are in place on Kill Avenue and Glenageary Road Upper.
Police are asking anyone with information or dash-cam footage from between 8:00 am and 9:00 am on 5 July 2026 near Kill Avenue to contact Dun Laoghaire Garda Station on 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
Community Reaction
Local residents expressed shock. Irene Hayden, a resident of 20 years, said: "It is a really quiet area. We have been living here 20 plus years and never had anything like this before. It is a bit scared, that is so close to home that it could happen. You read about these things in the news, but don't really think that it can actually happen on your doorstep."
Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph, who lives across the road, said: "I have not seen anything like this before and the people are shocked and scared. People are living very peacefully, especially in this area. It is a big shock."
Context
This is the first gun killing in the Republic of Ireland since May 2024, when small-time criminal Josh Itseli, 20, was shot dead accidentally by an associate in Drimnagh, south Dublin. Gardai believe both deaths were accidental.
